“Donation of the older part of the O. Væring collection”

O. Væring was established in 1863 and is one of Norway’s oldest photography firms. For more than 160 years we have documented and conveyed Norwegian art in close collaboration with artists and institutions. The archive therefore represents a significant part of Norway’s photographic history.

The older part of the O. Væring collection, consisting of glass plates and black-and-white negatives, is currently stored in rented premises. The lease for this storage facility expires in November, and another relocation would represent an overly extensive and resource-demanding burden for O. Væring. Should the collection not find a recipient for donation, the material will unfortunately have to be destroyed.

We therefore wish to explore whether professional institutions may have the opportunity and interest to take over all or parts of the collection. Where relevant, the material may be divided according to scholarly relevance, for example if a particular section is considered of special interest to the institution’s work. The purpose is to ensure the preservation and professional management of the collection for the future.

We kindly ask that the material be collected directly from the archive by mid-October.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope for a constructive dialogue about the possibilities.
